Cold Brew is a great way of stocking up on ice coffee during
the summer. You can make a large batch and keep in the
fridge for a week. It differs to regular ice coffee as it brings
out the chocolate and caramel notes of coffee. It goes great with milk and syrup or just as it is!
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
100g medium ground beans • 1000ml cold water • Scale
Dripper of your choice (Eg Hario V60, Chemex etc.)
Paper filter • Jug • Cup • Fridge
Steps to Brew Cold Brew Coffee
1. Measure Your Coffee and Water
- Use a ratio of 1 cup of coarsely ground coffee to 4 cups of water. Adjust based on how much you want to make.
2. Combine Coffee and Water
- In a large jar or pitcher, combine the coffee grounds with water.
- Stir gently to ensure all the grounds are fully saturated.
3. Steep
- Cover the jar or pitcher and let it steep at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
- Steep for at least 12 hours; 18-24 hours is ideal for a stronger brew.
4. Strain the Coffee
- After steeping, strain the coffee using a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into another container to remove the larger grounds.
- For a smoother finish, strain again through a coffee filter or a nut milk bag.
5. Serve
- Dilute the cold brew concentrate with water or milk to taste. Typically, a 1:1 ratio of cold brew to water or milk works well.
- Add ice cubes and enjoy.
6. Store
- Store any remaining cold brew concentrate in the refrigerator.
- It will keep for up to two weeks.
Tips for Perfect Cold Brew
- Grind Size: Coarse grind is essential to prevent over-extraction and bitterness.
- Water Quality: Use filtered water for the best taste.
- Steeping Time: Adjust steeping time based on your taste preference. Longer steeping makes a stronger concentrate.
- Adjust Ratios: For a stronger brew, use a higher coffee-to-water ratio. For a milder taste, use more water when diluting.
Flavor Variations
- Sweeteners: Add simple syrup, honey, or flavored syrups.
- Milk Alternatives: Use almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk.
- Flavor Infusions: Add vanilla beans, cinnamon sticks, or cocoa nibs during the steeping process.
